With Competere we recently convened another Palm Oil Global Community meeting in Brussels, held under Chatham House rules at the Embassy of Guatemala. As part of an ongoing platform, it reaffirmed a simple reality: in today’s fragmented landscape, coordination is not optional; it is strategic.

The Palm Oil Global Community continues to bring together a diverse and growing network of stakeholders, from EU institutions to producing countries, NGOs, EU national initiatives, and experts, to navigate an increasingly complex policy and geopolitical environment.

This latest meeting comes at a critical moment. With the EUDR under review and implementation timelines evolving, uncertainty is rising. But so is the need for alignment. Over time, this platform has proven its value not as a one-off initiative, but as a continuous space for exchange, coordination, and coalition-building across actors who rarely sit at the same table.
What emerged clearly is that the palm oil debate, and, more broadly, global food supply chains, are no longer confined to sustainability. It now intersects with trade, regulatory frameworks, reputation, and geopolitical positioning.
THEY WANT TO TAX THE CLOUD: FIND OUT MORE
The format remains deliberately efficient: short, focused interventions followed by open discussion, allowing participants to move quickly from updates to strategic alignment.
Three key dynamics stood out.
First, the need to continuously bridge perspectives between producing and consuming countries. Policies developed in isolation risk creating friction rather than solutions. Structured dialogue remains essential.
Second, the growing importance of narrative. Increasingly, regulatory outcomes are shaped not only by scientific evidence, but by how issues are framed and communicated. Alignment on facts must be matched by alignment in messaging.

Third, the strategic role of coalitions. In a context of uncertainty, no single actor can effectively operate alone. Strengthening an existing coalition, through trust, continuity, and shared objectives, is what enables impact.
This is where Competere plays its role: convening, connecting, and coordinating. Not simply observing dynamics, but shaping them by turning fragmentation into structured cooperation.
In today’s environment, resilience is not built in isolation. It is built through coalitions.
