EU Sustainability Policies: From Green Ideology to Business Simplification? Coffee Break La7
I joined Coffee Break on Italy’s La7 to analyze the latest European Council outcomes. I wanted to share with viewers a sharper, forward-looking reading beyond the usual news flashes.
Europe is clearly changing course: moving from the “sustainability at any cost” mantra of the last Commission, think Green Deal, Fit for 55, EUDR, PPWR, Nutriscore, to a new phase focused on simplification, cutting red tape, and giving businesses breathing space in the name of competitiveness and growth.

A shift in direction? Absolutely. But there is also a real risk of a policy short-circuit.
As I highlighted on air, Europe risks swinging from one extreme to the other: first an ideological regulatory squeeze, now a rushed deregulation with little strategic backbone. Both approaches could undermine the real goal — building a prosperous, balanced Europe that protects its people and supports its businesses.
I provided some concrete examples I have been tracking as a policy analyst:
-
EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation), designed to protect forests but threatening vital agricultural supply chains and harming both producers and consumers.
-
PPWR (Packaging Regulation), born from green ambitions but creating disproportionate costs and rigidities for entire sectors.
-
Nutriscore, which aims to inform but ends up confusing, even penalizing the Mediterranean diet.

We need a pragmatic path that balances ecological transition with the real needs of citizens and companies.
That is exactly why I keep bringing my insights and experience to places where public policies are built — or broken. Reading the game before others do, anticipating the side effects of rushed decisions, is the value I offer to those who want to truly change things.
