iFood at Federico II: the Mediterranean Diet as a balanced lifestyle
The presentation of iFood took place at the historic Federico II University of Naples – the home of the Mediterranean Diet. It was a privilege to share the stage with some of Italy’s most respected nutrition experts, including Prof. Gabriele Riccardi, Prof. Antonio Colantuoni, and Prof. Marcellino Monda, to discuss the core messages of the book.
iFood at Federico II: the Mediterranean Diet as a balanced lifestyle
We tackled three urgent and interconnected issues:
- Lack of nutrition education: there is a fundamental gap in teaching how the human body works as a thermodynamic machine that consumes and burns energy. This knowledge should start in primary school and include an understanding of nutrients, food, and the role of an active, balanced lifestyle.
- Ineffective and harmful policies: targeted taxes, front-of-pack labels, and prescriptive regulations are failing. Worse, they’re damaging local food traditions, preventing the spread of knowledge, and limiting personal freedom of choice.
- The rise of precision nutrition: a new paradigm is emerging — personalized nutrition. It’s a powerful opportunity to put science at the service of individuals, but it must be handled with care, responsibility, and clear communication.
READ IT AGAIN: EDUCATING FOR A BALANCED LIFESTYLE BEGINS AT HOME
The day concluded with the launch of a concrete initiative: to promote the Mediterranean Diet not as a trend, but as a balanced lifestyle – one that should be reintegrated into educational curricula at every level.
Because food is knowledge. And knowledge empowers freedom.
